national circus school

A complete formation

The national circus school of Montreal is, first of all... a school. Not a traditional circus school, where people go on evenings and weekends to learn circus skills, but a real school, giving a full academic formation with a circus arts specialization.

The school offers lots of other services, like extra-curricular formation, programs for trainers, summer camps, a library, initiation activities etc. Here are the main programs :

The preparation for advanced training is an extra-curricular program aimed at students 9 years of age or older that allows students to continue their primary or secondary education in another school.

The circus and high school studies program, offered to students in Grades 7 through 11, combines required academic subjects as outlined by the Quebec secondary school curriculum with professional training in the circus arts. After obtaining their high school diploma, students pursue higher education through the Diploma of Collegial Studies in Circus Arts program.

The diploma of collegial studies in circus arts (3 years) marks the pinnacle of higher education in the circus arts and leads directly to a professional career. Graduates receive a college diploma, from the Quebec Ministry of Education. Intended for Canadian or French students who have completed their high school studies, it combines specialized training in the circus and theatre arts with a general college education.

The diploma of national circus school studies (3 years) is intended exclusively for foreign students who have completed their high school studies and constitutes the final phase of higher education in the circus arts.

For those who prefer only have circus as a pastime, recreational circus courses are aimed at young people between 9 and 17 years of age, and provide a chance to have some diversion while learning the basic techniques of circus arts.

In the fall of 2003 the School moved to an entirely new 7,200 square metre building especially designed to provide state-of-the art professional training in the circus arts and with new facilities catering to all disciplines.

The school “has remained independent of circus companies yet sensitive to their evolution and to the need for setting professional standards for circus artists” and invites every fall future candidates to come accompanied to the School's Open House event. It's a privileged occasion to attend information sessions on the various programs, visit the facilities and meet students and teachers.

Moreover, the national circus school of Montral has a library including periodicals, books, audiovisual records and other documentation and wishes to share its collections and grants public access through a subscription service.
